Systems Engineer - IndyCar
Reporting to the Chief Engineer and working with the other car engineers, you will be responsible for the reliability and performance of the vehicle which includes implementing the cars’ data system software, monitoring and supporting the status of various electrical systems, mechanical systems and sensors. You will be expected to be an integral part of the race team that always operates the car in a professional and safe manner while ensuring that Engineering requirements and requests are met promptly and accurately.
Base: Indianapolis, IN
Degree: educated in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or Physics.
Experience: 3 years of experience in motorsport desirable, but consideration will be given to other, well qualified, applicants.
Key Responsibilities
- Attendance at all races and necessary test sessions.
- Monitoring and optimizing the vehicle systems for best reliability and performance.
- Responsible for implementing the correct software into the race cars and ensuring they meet all the relevant set up parameters and quality criteria.
- Responsibility for the condition, calibration and lifing of all car and equipment sensors ensuring they meet all the relevant set up parameters and quality criteria.
- Responsible for Calibration of Sensors.
- Support of rig tests and DIL simulator sessions, as necessary.
- Ensuring that the car is built consistently to the highest standards and meets the relevant set up parameters and all the criteria of the build specification and homologation.
- Post running inspections of all sensors and relating items, reporting of condition and damage to the Chief Engineer and Chief Mechanic.
- Maintenance of minimum stock levels of sensors and electrical components.
- Programming of car control unit / data logger including data off load
- Set up and monitoring of car telemetry systems.
- Preparation of standard reports, graphs, tables, etc. both trackside and at the factory
- Reporting back all operational aspects of the car systems to the engineering team; highlighting any on or off-track issues and indicating solutions or potential countermeasures.
- Manage workflow and software updates with Test and factory development teams.
- Working with Engineering Team to continually improve and upgrade software tools.
- Following Engineering procedures and protocols, pertaining to assembly, operation and safety.
- Recording and feedback of parameters and incidences as they occur or as requested.
- Assist in the set up and operation of the garage and its infrastructure.
- Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Race Team Chief Engineer or designee
- Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
- Responsibility for the cleanliness and condition of your work area, the garage, the factory and all tools and equipment.
- Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
- An ability to read and interpret technical drawings including wiring diagrams and information pertaining to assembly, periodic updates and modifications.
- Strong data analysis and critical thinking skills through both theoretical and practical knowledge.
- Excellent understanding of automotive software and electronics
- Strong understanding of current race car data acquisition systems; ideally Cosworth Pi Toolbox
- Working knowledge of best practices as it relates to motorsport and vehicle systems.
- Vehicle CANbus, Ethernet networking, management and diagnostic knowledge is required.
- An ability to manufacturer and or repair minor wiring looms or sensors is an advantage.
- IT literate and highly competent in the use of multiple packages and platforms.
- Comfortable in the ability to communicate both in written and verbal form when discussing engineering solutions and requirements.
- Ability to consistently work to the highest professional standards with an exceptional attitude towards attention to detail.
- Solid computer knowledge, preferred experience in Microsoft Office products and VBA.
- Software Programming ability in Python, MatLab or C/C+/C#
- Programming & Use of Microcontrollers such as Arduino/RPi/ESP32
- Skilled in Programming of Circuits & PCBs

The IndyCar championship is a unique working environment, a flexible approach and can-do attitude is ideal. Your ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require extensive domestic and international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
