Job Description:
General Motors Company of Canada – Canadian Non-Manufacturing, is inviting applications for the position of Environmental Engineering Co-Op – Non-Manufacturing Canada. The successful candidate will be assigned to the environmental department for the entire duration of the 16 month Co-Op .
GM Canada Environmental is charging ahead with a new mission! At GM Environmental, we are geared towards developing creative solutions to environmental challenges. In this role, you will gain the experience needed to jump-start your career in the environmental field by developing an understanding of environmental compliance in large automotive manufacturing and non-manufacturing operations. The GM Non-Manufacturing portfolio includes technical research and design centers, test tracks, parts distribution centers, next generation vehicle training facilities, and administrative buildings. At these locations, you will drive sustainable initiatives, as you work closely with the Facility Environmental Engineers, implementing projects in water, waste and air. The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident Environmental Engineering student with strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation of their area and equipment. This position is located primarily at the GM Oshawa Elevation Center, with visits to the Markham Elevation Center and Woodstock PDC several times a month. There may be periodic travel to other GM sites across Canada. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license for the start date of the internship.
Role Summary:
General Motors Canada is committed to protecting human health and the environment and driving continuous improvement. Join our environmental team to gain experience in support of maintaining compliance, implementing best-practices, work standardization, and training across a multitude of GM non-manufacturing sites including technical research and design, administration, parts distribution, and training facilities. The position is located primarily at the GM Canadian Technical Centre in Oshawa, with visits to Markham and Woodstock several times a month, and periodic travel to other GM sites across Canada.
On top of the work outlined above, you will work on sustainability and community development work at GM non-manufacturing sites as well.
The Team:
The Environmental Team consists of highly trained environmental professionals who serve as a first-line resource for our manufacturing and non-manufacturing business partners. We are proficient at implementing robust environmental and sustainability practices into daily business decisions and operations to comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations while fostering community
connections. We work collaboratively with our service suppliers, community partners, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and legal counsel staff.
Key Responsibilities:

Support environmental compliance related to operations at each of GM Canada’s non-manufacturing sites including storm water management, air emissions, spill prevention, and waste management/recycling programs
-
Plan and lead employee engagement campaigns at GM Canada’s non-manufacturing sites (Earth Week, Waste Reduction Week, World Environment Day, Pollinator Planting, etc)
-
Lead sustainability initiatives at GM Canada’s non-manufacturing sites related to GM’s Reduction Commitments (water, energy, and waste reduction).

Support the management of each non-manufacturing site’s ISO14001 Environmental Management System
-
Coordinate site-wide department training on environmentally relevant ISO/EMS Task Instruction Sheets
-
Support each site’s waste management compliance with applicable legislation and assist waste management contractor in resolving waste collection issues
-
Support zero waste to landfill activities and actively pursue alternatives for waste diversion/reduction.

Ensure the GM Canada Environmental team is up to date with all upcoming environmental legislation changes.

Conduct site Environmental Tours and ensure the completion of any related corrective action.
Qualifications:
-
Pursuit of a Bachelor's (3rd or 4th year) degree with Co-op in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

Enrolled in a qualifying Ontario co‑operative education, or internship program
-
Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada and a 16-month term

Must have a valid full Class G Ontario Driver’s License, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province license

Have the ability to travel to various GM Canadian facilities
Preferred Qualifications:

Past experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment

Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 standard and environmental legislation

Bilingual, with proficiency in French language
