The Role:
General Motors of Canada Company – Oshawa Campus, is inviting applications from Engineering & Science students for one (1) Environmental Engineering 16 month internship position .
This is an opportunity to jump-start your career by gaining valuable professional experience within a manufacturing environment. With the recent investment of over C$1 Billion into GM Oshawa to begin making pick-up trucks, the plant has ramped up to full production. The GM Oshawa truck manufacturing will play a key part in funding GM’s all electric future. The intern will be assigned to support the Oshawa T1 truck manufacturing operations, and the Oshawa OEM Stamped Products and Service Operations (stamping, welding, and warehousing of aftermarket parts) for the entire duration of the 16 month internship program. The intern will also have the opportunity to engage with our environmental team at the Oshawa Canadian Technical Centre, and corporate environmental team, supporting General Motors sites across Canada.
The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident engineering student with strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. You will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation for their area. Also, you must have a valid unrestricted driver’s licence.
The Team:
The Environmental Team consists of highly trained environmental professionals who serve as a first-line resource for our manufacturing and non-manufacturing business partners. We are proficient at implementing robust environmental and sustainability practices into daily business decisions and operations to comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations while fostering community
connections. We work collaboratively with our service suppliers, community partners, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and legal counsel staff.
Key Responsibilities

Coordinate industrial process wastewater and stormwater programs in compliance with local by-laws and Ontario Ministry of Environment (MECP) Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA).

Oversee industrial wastewater & stormwater management system (wastewater discharge, detention ponds) sampling and 3rd party analytical program.

Support environmental compliance and initiatives related to plant operations including wastewater discharge, storm water management, air emissions, sewer systems, chemical usage, invoice validation, and waste management/recycling programs.

Support Federal, Provincial and Regional environmental reporting such as National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI), Greenhouse Gas (GHG), Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) Temperature, and Regional Semi-Annual Wastewater Discharge.

Support development, implementation, and continuous improvement of multiple ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

Project Manager for various environmental engineering and facility projects as assigned.

Develop and coordinate plant sustainability community outreach activities and environmental awareness programs i.e. Waste Reduction Week, GM ecoSTEM program, Tandem Global WHC Wildlife Habitat Certification program.

Pursue new opportunities to increase environmental profile in the community and within General Motors network.

Coordinate and support Zero Waste and Landfill Free plant waste management program initiatives and in compliance with applicable waste legislation.

Conduct environmental inspections of various processes throughout the plant including waste collection, storage tanks, and spill containment.

Identify and develop Environmental Award applications to support visibility of environmental programs.

Develop the application to support the sites Gold Wildlife Habitat Certification.

Lead various continuous improvement special projects (varies year-to-year)

Perform other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
-
Currently enrolled in an Engineering or Science degree (3rd and 4th year students) Co-Op program in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

Strong organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills

Highly adaptable with ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment

Self-motivated and confident to continually improve the operation of their area

Fundamental computer skills including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Past experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment is an asset

Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 and environmental legislation is an asset; and

Must have a valid full G Canadian driver’s license
