The first American Formula 1 team to compete in the sport since 1986, MoneyGram Haas F1 Team made an immediate impression with a memorable points-scoring debut at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. Nine years later, and the team continues to demonstrate growth and a clear direction with its future objectives – coming off the back of its second-best season to-date in Formula 1.
We’re a racing team – not a corporate machine. We have three HQs – Kannapolis in the US, Banbury in the UK and Maranello in Italy – each powered by passionate, loyal and hardworking team ambassadors. General Summary:
This position reports to the Head of Communications or their designee and is located in Banbury, UK. The Communications Manager will help deliver the strategic goals of the Communications Department and assist in all facets of the promotion of the team through internal and external communications. Responsible for delivering impactful media engagement, both at track and beyond, as well as support in driver and team communications to ensure a consistent and positive brand image.
General Responsibilities:
- Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop trustworthy relationships between all personnel and departments.
- Responsible for the overall performance of the department, ensuring targets and milestones are achieved.
- Manage department personnel from recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement through to separation.
- Mentor, train and guide personnel as required. Develop staff using effective performance reviews and development plans.
- Responsible for establishing and adhering to departmental budgets to maintain a practical yet functional department.
- Produce monthly departmental reports to the COO details the status of the department, including but not limited to, budget actuals and major projects.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Communications or their designee.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning – Input into creating and implementing the team communications strategy in order to align with organizational objectives.
- Content Creation – Writing and editing communications content across a variety of channels, such as press releases, newsletters, social media and websites – extending beyond core activities of the race team and into additional brand initiatives where appropriate such as – but not limited to, Esports, ESG etc.
- Race Weekend Communications – Support on-site event media execution, logistics and messaging, working with the communications lead and wider department personnel to deliver clear and consistent messaging on race weekends.
- Media & Public Relations – Building and maintaining relationships with key journalists and media outlets, managing media relations, and acting as a forward-facing member of the Communications Department, both internally and externally.
- Crisis Communications – Assist in the execution and logistics of crisis communications strategy to protect the team’s reputation during a crisis or public-facing issue.
- Internal Communications – Working with the wider Communications Department and other stakeholders in ensuring effective internal communications – through newsletters, company-wide announcements and other channels where appropriate.
- Monitoring & Evaluation – Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of communication efforts – tracking coverage, sentiment and KPIs, while supporting wider industry media monitoring.
- Brand Management – Support brand and partner communications, from strategy to media outreach, facilitating a consistent brand voice and messaging across all communications.
- Oversee the ad hoc projects as assigned.
- Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
Education & Work Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing is required.
- Prior experience, at least 5 years, in a similar communications role, or demonstrable career path is required – preferably within motorsports or a sports or lifestyle-based platform.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven experience in sports or lifestyle communications, with strong media relationships, especially across sport, news and consumer platforms.
- Crisis communications experience or agency management experience advantageous.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and planning skills.
- Ability to prioritize work under pressure and deliver in a fast-paced and global environment.
- Solid understanding of sports communications strategies, and in particular motorsport knowledge is advantageous.
- Strong decision-making, research, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations.
- Work well within a team environment.
Equipment and Applications:
- Experience with all Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with content management systems.
- Understanding of media distribution and monitoring systems.
- Working knowledge of social media platform and uploading content.
Work Environment Physical Demands:
An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast- paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
