The Role
As a Technical Specialist - Upper Steering System you will lead General Motors in the development and integration of advanced mechatronic steering systems, including mechanical and electrical components, motors, sensors, and software functions. This role serves as the global single point of contact for upper steering systems, driving innovation to enable the future of driving while ensuring world-class safety and customer satisfaction. You will collaborate cross-functionally and globally with engineering, purchasing, leadership, and suppliers to deliver cutting-edge steering technologies aligned with GM’s 0/0/0 vision.
What You’ll Do
- Provide global technical leadership for upper steering systems, including steer-by-wire actuators, column-mounted EPS, and stowable columns.
- Drive innovation and contribute to technology roadmaps for advanced steering systems.
- Lead and support SODW and ATW projects, collaborating with internal teams and suppliers.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation (STS, SSTS, CTS, DFMEA, best practices, ICDs).
- Create virtual design and validation plans and robust BOM strategies.
- Manage sourcing strategies, supplier technical reviews, and maintain approved supplier lists.
- Ensure compliance with safety and crashworthiness performance metrics.
- Resolve design and integration issues and support FPE investigations.
- Conduct benchmarking activities and contribute to peer reviews.
- Communicate technical direction and provide consultation to TSs, VSEs, DREs, ETLs, and leadership.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 10+ years of professional engineering experience, specializing in steering systems or a related technical field.
- Design release engineering production execution experience with steering columns and/or electronic power steering.
- Expertise in mechanical systems, electro-mechanical devices, and electric motors.
- Strong knowledge of steering system development, integration, and validation processes.
- Proficiency in DFMEA/PFMEA and technical documentation (STS, SSTS, CTS).
- DFSS Black Belt Certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field
