Be an integral part of a cohort of students working across all functions of our team
As an Industrial Placement in Metallic Machining:
You will be an integral part of our Production Engineering team, supporting the machining operations that produce critical metallic components for both the race car and wind tunnel programmes.
You’ll work closely with our race car machining department, gaining exposure to the manufacture of high-precision components such as gearbox casings, suspension uprights, axles, and other parts that are central to race car performance. You'll also support our aero machining team in delivering front and rear wings, aero structures, and 60% scale model components for our wind tunnel testing programme.
Your work will involve process improvement projects that focus on increasing throughput, reducing non-conformance, and enhancing the automation of routine tasks to improve efficiency and data visibility across both machine shops. You will help streamline performance reporting and develop new digital systems and methods to reduce manual inputs on the shop floor.
Throughout the placement, you will work closely with — and be coached by — Managers, Team Leaders and Production Engineers, who will help you develop a deep understanding of our machining workflows, manufacturing strategies and continuous improvement methodologies. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to key projects from early in your placement and will be encouraged to take ownership of your work.
You will also gain cross-functional experience by working alongside other areas of our manufacturing group, including Composite Manufacturing and Quality, helping ensure alignment across disciplines. In addition, you will interact with other key business areas such as the design office, build departments, and aero operations teams, giving you insight into how manufacturing decisions impact the broader performance and development of the car.
What You Will Learn:
Hands-on understanding of manufacturing techniques used to produce precision F1 components
The complete production journey for high-value parts, from CAD to final inspection
Process development for both full-size and aero metallic components
Root cause analysis and non-conformance resolution strategies
The tools and technologies used to digitise and automate production workflows
Real-time performance metric development and reporting techniques
Planning and scheduling techniques to increase machining department throughput
Collaborative problem-solving across engineering and operations teams
Skilled use of our machining CAD/CAM package, Siemens NX
Successful candidates will:
Have a strong interest in manufacturing processes and automation
