The company:
Williams’ core competencies are the design and development of racing cars to compete in the Formula One World Championship. As one of the world's leading Formula One teams, the company has secured 16 FIA Formula One World Championship titles since its foundation in 1977 and is now moving into an exciting era under new ownership defined by relentless innovation and living sustainable performance in every dimension.
Role Purpose & Team Mission:
Here at Williams Racing, simulation tools underpin our cars performance development. By supporting existing tools and developing new simulations and toolsets, you will be part of a team that is crucial to the success of the cars on track.
Assisting the Tyre Science Team Leader with forming and executing the group strategy, you'll be responsible for developing the models and tools that enable the team to understand and then optimise tyre performance. Additionally, though the role is factory based, there may be some requirement to support trackside activities from time to time.
You'll be critical to the development of computationally efficient tyre models, working closely with other members of the Tyre Science Team, whose mission is:
Analysing, understanding and quantifying all tyre performance factors, capturing them in models, simulations and optimisation tools.
Parameterising the tyre models to ensure good correlation to reality
Evaluating performance effects of changes and supporting track performance optimisation.
Identifying car design, setup and operational improvements to maximise tyre performance.
Key Objectives:
Contribute to the delivery of high-performance, accurate, numerically efficient tyre models, capable of operating in real-time and desktop simulation environments.
Collaborate with the Simulation Development Team to integrate tyre models into simulation tools in order to deliver advanced simulation capabilities
Expand the tyre simulation toolset capabilities and integration with wider framework.
Support the Tyre Science Team Leader, assisting with the definition of the tyre modelling and performance optimisation strategy, and deputising for them as required.
Help to define the architecture and technology of tyre models for use across the company.
Provide direct technical supervision, direction and delegation to more junior members of the team as required (without direct line management responsibility).
Undertake Non-F1 tasks and projects across a variety of VD areas, as required by the business and/or as opportunities for development.
Requirements:
Ability to plan and deliver simulation capability development projects and strategies effectively.
Experience in Simulation and Model Development.
C++ and Python experience a plus.
Strong communication and teamworking ability.
An excellent degree in Engineering or related discipline
Experience in vehicle dynamics, optimisation, and tyre model development is essential. Previous F1 experience and software skills are also advantageous.
This job description is not exhaustive, and the job holder will be required to carry out from time to time tasks in addition to the above that will be both reasonable and within their capabilities.
