The Role:
We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Cal Tech Specialist – Suspension Features, within GM’s Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) Steering, Suspension, and Performance Race Software organization. This is new and fast-growing area of the business with ample opportunities for technical and thought leadership. The Cal Tech Specialist – Suspension Features is responsible for indirectly leading a team of Calibration Engineers to produce high-quality, on time deliverables for all vehicle programs using common methods, processes, and procedures. The selected candidate will also have a unique opportunity to influence and develop future Suspension features and controls strategies, stand-up calibration processes in Suspension, as well as retain ownership of selected vehicle calibration responsibilities within the team. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to take the lead on establishing the methods, processes, and procedures that the Suspension calibration team will use for all GM in-house developed Suspension controls and software.
The ideal candidate should possess comprehensive experience in calibration as well as deep understanding of controls algorithm/software development within the VMEC organization, as well as demonstrated leadership, planning, communication, teamwork, and prioritization skills. This role will involve the creation of calibration process, procedures, and methods for an all-new calibration team. The ideal candidate will need to be able to deal with the ambiguity that is associated with a new team.
What You’ll do:
- Champion the safety of our employees and customers

- Ensure compliance with government regulations and GM policies
- Establish the foundational processes, procedures, and methods that will be used for Suspension Feature calibration. Ensure alignment with broader VMEC calibration standards.
- Develop common approaches and institutionalize them in Calibration Standard Work (Calibration Procedures, Deliverables, Master Calibration, etc.)
- Identify opportunities to leverage virtual environments for calibration standard work items
- Provide technical leadership for Suspension Feature calibration strategic direction and support associated algorithm development for the feature areas.
- Support Calibration Engineers to ensure high-quality, on-time deliveries and flawless launches
- Mentor Calibration Engineers, providing technical training and establish good communication and knowledge-sharing
- Collaborate with Agile controls and software teams during the design process. Influence algorithm designs and provide feedback during software demos.
- Support the resolution of development issues. Support resolution of vehicle, plant, service, and customer issues
- Document and integrate Lessons Learned from development and field issues into algorithms and Calibration Standard Work
- Serve as a technical leader in multiple forums
- Support technical calibration peer reviews and leadership reviews
- Provide input to VTS, STS, SSTS, CTS, and BTS specifications as applicable
- Support ATW and Advanced Calibration projects related to Suspension Features
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar
- Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience (Suspension, vehicle dynamics, chassis/driveline performance, chassis controls, calibration, etc.)
- Thorough physics-based knowledge of vehicle dynamics and suspension subsystems
- Experience calibrating on production programs
- Experience with GM standard calibration processes (Stages PoE)
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate and motivate the performance of a cross-functional team and achieve substantial
- Demonstrates influence without administrative authority
- Exercises independent judgment with minimal input from leaders
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction to other engineers and engineering support personnel
- Very high level of analytical problem solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute new processes
- Creates and maintains an environment that enables all participants to contribute to full potential
- Familiarity with Virtual development tools / environments
- Fluent with in-vehicle development tools (INCA, NeoVI, etc.)
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
- MS in Engineering with focus on controls.
- Knowledge of Suspension Height Control systems or Knowledge of Vehicle Dynamics Control systems
- Knowledge of integration testing
