The Role
The Engineering Efficiencies team is a hands-on group of software engineers within the Infrastructure Engineering organization. The team’s core mandate is to:
As the Senior Manager, you will grow and lead this team to accelerate key engineering initiatives through modern software practices, automation, and pragmatic system design. You’ll allocate capacity to high-impact projects, mentor early‑career engineers, and create a learning culture that consistently produces strong senior-level talent for GM’s broader engineering needs. The team also includes a small cadre of experienced Staff Engineers who act as technical leaders and mentors, partnering with you on architecture, planning, and delivery of key efforts.
At GM, we value leaders who are technically fluent, able to guide their teams through complex challenges, and passionate about mentoring engineers to grow into their best selves. Our managers create clarity, remove roadblocks, and advocate for their teams' long-term success.
-
Partner across Infrastructure Engineering to align on roadmaps, pain points, and opportunities, then provide burst engineering capacity that unblocks delivery and ensures teams meet commitments.
-
Drive modern engineering and automation practices (CI/CD, testing, observability, IaC, etc.) that improve delivery speed, reliability, and maintainability.
-
Set clear goals, operating rhythms, and success metrics (e.g., time-to-deliver, backlog burn-down, reliability SLIs/SLOs) to demonstrate impact and predictability.
-
Ensure strong technical execution: code reviews, design reviews, iterative delivery, and pragmatic system design aligned to reliability, security, and cost constraints.
