Position Summary:
The Senior Development Engineer is workshop based and plays a critical role in driving the technological and competitive advancements of the team. Responsibilities involve a mix of leadership, engineering, and innovation to ensure the team remains competitive on the track and ensuring the car is continuously improved within regulatory constraints, and translating innovative ideas into on-track success.
Responsibilities:
Leading Innovation and Technology Development:
Oversee Vehicle and equipment Improvements: The Senior Development Engineer is responsible for working with the Engineering group to develop new car components and improve existing ones, in all areas influencing car and team performance. The Senior Development Engineer will contribute to the effectiveness and reliability of systems external to the car which influence Team performance.
Advanced Data Analysis: Analyze performance data from races and testing sessions to identify areas for improvement, in cooperation with race engineering personnel.
Failures Analysis: Troubleshoot on track car failures – Analyze data and parts and propose solutions.
External Testing: prepare, plan and execute external testing including – Wind tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), suspension systems tests, transmission efficiency tests and other developmental rig tests.
Team and Project Management:
R&D Strategy and Roadmap: Develop and execute the long-term R&D strategy in alignment with the team’s competitive goals and objectives. This includes prioritizing projects based on performance needs and available resources.
Collaboration with Other Departments: Work closely with the engineering group, technical director and Crew Chief to ensure that innovations can be translated into on-track performance.
Budget Management: Ensure that R&D activities are conducted within budgetary constraints; in cooperation with the Technical Director
Leadership and Talent Development: Lead and mentor the R&D team, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to perform effectively, including a culture of innovation and engineering excellence.
Testing and Development:
Track Testing and Component Testing: Contribute to track test planning and execution.
Failure Analysis and Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement in the solution of issues affecting reliability and performance.
Regulation Compliance:
Monitor and Adapt to Rule Changes: Ensure that the team’s technological innovations comply with the IndyCar series regulations, which can evolve from season to season. The Senior Development Engineer must stay updated on all rule changes and how they affect car design and performance.
Partnerships and Supplier Management:
Manage External Relationships: Work with external suppliers, technical partners, and universities on research projects. This includes sourcing the best materials, parts, and technologies that align with the team’s goals.
Technology Partnerships: Collaborate with external companies for specialized research or access to advanced technologies.
Long-term Competitive Strategy:
Forecasting and Future Planning: Develop strategies to keep the team current with emerging technologies relevant to the team’s performance goals.
Innovative Edge: Constantly seek new areas where the team can gain an edge over competitors, whether through vehicle development, performance analysis, or equipment improvements.
Physical Requirements and Body Mechanics
As part of our Indy racing team, this role involves physically demanding tasks that require strength, coordination, and safe body mechanics. Candidates must be able to:
Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally heavier loads, utilizing proper lifting techniques to prevent strain or injury.
Demonstrate the ability to perform repetitive motions including bending, kneeling, and twisting, especially in tight or confined spaces, while maintaining proper posture and body mechanics.
Safely handle tools, equipment, and racing components, ensuring ergonomic handling to minimize risks of musculoskeletal injuries.
Be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment, often in varying weather conditions, while adhering to safety protocols related to body positioning and movement.
Proper body mechanics are critical to maintaining the safety and performance of our team. Training in safe lifting techniques and ergonomic practices will be provided to support team members’ well-being.
