At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
As a Safety Forensic Engineer, you will investigate and analyze the field performance of GM current and past production vehicles to identify potential safety concerns, emerging issues, and performance anomalies that require deeper review. This role combines technical investigation, data analysis, vehicle inspection, and cross-functional collaboration to understand how components and subsystems perform in real-world conditions.
You will research historical and current engineering information, partner with internal GM teams to gather critical insights, and use established field inspection processes to evaluate vehicles in service or post-crash when needed. You will compile findings, assess potential risk, and present recommendations to leadership forums including the Safety and Compliance Categorization Team (SCCT) and Potential Investigation Review (PIR) board. This role is essential to supporting investigations, informing case decisions, and strengthening GM’s commitment to vehicle safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.

-
Inspect, research and analyze the field performance of GM current and past production vehicle.
-
Work with data research to identify potential anomalies in field performance that should be understood in more detail.
-
Research the development of components and subsystems within the context of observed field performance by collaborating with other GM resources. This may include identifying and interviewing GM employees as well as probing GM systems for historical information related to the parts in question.
-
Utilize existing field inspection processes to gain further information about specific vehicles.
-
When appropriate, conduct field inspections of post-crash vehicles or in-service vehicles either at dealerships or in the possession of a customer.
-
Compile and scrutinize gathered information to resolve if the observed field performance may constitute an emerging issue.
-
Make formal presentations to the Safety and Compliance Categorization Team (SCCT) or Potential Investigation Review (PIR) board.
-
Support resulting investigations as required with background information and engineering analysis Coordinate SCCT agenda with engineers, managers and senior managers and facilitate meetings to produce concise case decisions.
