What you'll do
The Engine Build and Rating Technician will be responsible for performing diversified duties to rebuild, teardown, and rating of automotive units such as internal combustion engines, transmissions, and vehicles in automotive test laboratory according to technical specifications and procedures and safety needs to support achieving business unit goals.
- Perform precision rebuilds and assembly of various light-duty passenger car and heavy-duty diesel internal combustion engine makes as per technical specifications of applicable ASTM procedures, build manuals, and OEM specifications for industry certification / qualification testing as well as for research and developmental testing of engine oil lubricants and supporting Valvoline’s enterprise customers.
- Cleaning of engines and engine components, hone engine blocks, assemble sub-assemblies such as cylinder head, valvetrain etc. as per strict applicable technical specifications for the final build of test engines.
- Assembly builds of other automotive aggregates such as transmissions, differentials, axles etc. as necessary from time to time.
- Provide assistance and guidance to operators for newly built engine installation on the test stands.
- Provide troubleshooting and repair support for engine issues on the stand, such as leaks.
- Complete disassembly / teardown of test engines for end-of-test inspections and analysis.
- Component and assembly level metrological precision measurements and protocol checks during the engine build and teardown evaluation using various precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, bore dial gauges, surface analyzers and other precision tools.
- Ratings of end-of-test components for deposits and mechanical wear distress evaluation as per strict guidelines of ASTM procedures.
- Evaluation and failure assessment of field test engines and other hardware from time to time.
- Document build and teardown data, discrepancies, and improvements for continuous process optimization.
- Photograph end-of-test components and other articles.
- Provide support for non-conventional component building techniques such as 3D-printing.
- Maintain accurate inventory of tools, components, and consumables.
- Purchasing parts, components and consumable supplies used for the variety of test types, equipment for the test stands, and maintain inventory.
- Deal with external vendors for purchasing, repair and periodic calibrations.
- Schedule and work with external contractors on installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and other technicians to support design iterations and testing.
- Communicate issues to engineers/manager and take corrective actions as appropriate.
- Maintains safe working practices and conditions; participate in safety inspections and identifying and correcting hazards.
- Maintain good housekeeping and follow good work practices.
- Operates industrial equipment (vehicle lift, forklift, pallet jack) in order to safely perform install, uninstall, and maintenance of test equipment.
- Provide support for upgrading and improving existing systems.
- Provide support to engineers, operators, and other members of the team.
- Other duties and responsibilities as determined by Valvoline from time to time in its sole discretion.
What you need
Minimum Associates Degree or Diploma in Automotive Mechanics or equivalent; related industrial experience is a plus.
- Experience with internal combustion engines is necessary.
- Requirement to successfully complete the industry ASTM rating certification, annually.
- Able to operate computers, computerized systems, and use Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and assembly documentation.
- Have working knowledge of US std. pipe dimensions, pipe threads & thread sizes, various pipe fittings (NPT, Straight, Hyd., compression, camlock, US vs metric etc.), hoses, tubing etc.
- Understanding US std. and SI/metric units of length dimension as well as for other process parameters (such as weight, volume, force, temperature, pressure, flow etc.).
- Familiarity with hand tools, impact drivers, torque wrenches, gauges, and other shop equipment.
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the shop and lab areas.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on rebuild shop equipment and infrastructure.
- Must be able to identify and resolve mechanical issues during engine build processes.
- Strong attention to details with a focus on high-quality workmanship.
- Occasional overtime and after-hour support will be required.
- Proven mechanical aptitude and hands-on skills from automotive fields.
- Demonstrate good analytical and mechanical skills and sound troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision.
- Capable of executing project assignments.
- Self-motivated, self-learner, learning new technologies as they become available.
- The ability to wear requisite PPE and lift 50lbs.
- Must be able to stand, lift, bend, sit, climb stairs, and work in lab for extended periods of time.
