The role:
The Material Industrial Engineer is an integral part to daily and future Global Supply Chain (GSC) operations. The Material Industrial Engineer will lead Lean Material Strategies (LMS) initiatives at Spring Hill GPS and serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for daily and future material automation applications.
Work is of a technical nature and focused on making complex manufacturing processes more efficient, which involves understanding the systematic cross functionality of several departments, including engine machining, engine assembly, and Global Supply Chain. Significant use of independent judgment is required, as well as the ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and drive projects forward.
The Material Industrial Engineer will lead and support complex supply chain projects, particularly material automation projects, that involve collaboration between several in-plant departments, Headquarters engineering organizations, UAW team members, and third-party suppliers and contractors. Exceptional communication and relationship building skills are essential for success in this role.
What you’ll do:
Automation Projects:
- Lead the scoping, planning, and execution of large-scale material automation projects that drive reductions to labor costs and/or increases to operational efficiencies
- Collaborate with Headquarters engineering groups to develop business cases, Statements of Work (SOW), and Statements of Requirement (SOR) for new cost saving projects, particularly material automation projects and projects that support LMS
- Analyze data used for simulations to evaluate material automation feasibility and capability
- Build systems to ensure safe and efficient human interaction with material automation
- Analyze labor utilizations and implement job rebalances using GMOS, STDS, and APS
- Partner with engineering, operations, and other organizations to design new material packaging, gravity flow racks, dollies, and material staging stands to ensure designs meet quality, safety, ergonomic, and throughput requirements
- Support the configuration of automation workflows with robotic cells, other material automation vendors, and material pull systems
- Strategize interim-state installation plans to ensure production targets are met
- Participate in safety buyoff processes, including g-Risks and g-Comply, for new equipment and automation
- Travel to equipment suppliers as needed to support the runoff (equipment specification testing) process
- Partner with several stakeholder groups to support the automation installation process, including Start of Regular Production (SORP)
- Support large-scale production projects that involve the introduction of robotic cells, cobots, and other automated assembly line equipment as needed
Material Automation Operations:
- Program and make logic and systematic changes to a fleet of automated mobile equipment from multiple vendors
- Continuously improve material delivery routes for automation and drivers
- Leverage data to provide root cause analysis for complex material automation faults and inefficiencies
- Drive Throughput Improvement Process (TIP) improvements for a fleet of automated mobile equipment using data analytics
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for, train, and provide guidance to a team of UAW material automation attendants
- Standardize material automation fault recovery strategies and Preventative Maintenance (PM) tasks
- Establish material automation sustainment strategies, including spare parts planning, coordinating software updates, and coordinating supplier technician support
GSC Operations:
- Continuously improve dock, material staging, and warehouse layouts and operations
- Analyze existing operations and drive continuous improvements (CI) to processes and jobs with collaboration from UAW team members
- Lead and support Operational Excellence projects
- Monitor adherence to recommended Safety procedures and ergonomics guidelines
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, supply chain, or a related degree, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of work or educational experience in data analytics
- 2+ years of work or educational experience in automation, robotics, or general programming
- 1+ years of work or educational experience in supply chain
- 1+ years of work or educational experience in human factors (time studies, ergonomics, human-computer interaction, etc.)
- High level of interpersonal skills
- High level of communication and project management skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complex problems
- Experience leading large and difficult projects with a high level of autonomy
- Ability to work off-shift, weekends, or overtime to support project implementations or to make material automation programming changes
What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- 2+ years of manufacturing experience
- Proficiency in material automation programming
- Proficiency in understanding material automation lidar, camera, safety, and localization systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or other computer-aided drafting and layout tools
- Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification
Compensation:
- The expected base compensation for this role is: 77,500.00 - 121,600.00 USD Annual. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
