Dyno Team Leader (Car)
Brackley, UK
At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars with the aim of fighting for world championships each and every year.
Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.
Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.
About the Role:
As a Team Leader in the dyno you will be responsible for line management of a team of technicians and scheduling their activities across our four cells to deliver performance and reliability to the track. The team is sized to accommodate business as usual activities but the team leader is expected to be able to provide Senior Technician support as required during times such as key programme events.
Key Accountabilities (Duties):
Your Team Leader duties will include:
Direct line management of a group of car and facility technicians within the dyno setting - supporting their continued professional and personal development in line with the Engineering Group framework.
Ownership of the preparation and allocation of inventory for tests within the dyno, making sure we have the right hardware configured to the right specification for each event. To achieve this successfully will involve collaboration with your mirror “Dyno Team Leader (Cell)”, the Test Engineering team, the “R&D Manager” and the factory build departments to correctly prioritise and assign work amongst your direct reports.
Contribute to developing a performance culture – one that encourages curiosity, a can-do attitude, an experimental mindset, and where there is clarity on how the dyno contributes to trackside performance delivery.
Work closely with the “Dyno Team Leader (Cells)” – building a supportive working relationship to ensuring that the two teams work collaboratively and with an appreciation of the strengths and challenges of each role.
These are in addition to the following Senior Technician duties:
Consider behaviours at a team rather than individual level. You will be proactive in your support in demonstrating the importance of all our PRIDE values, our curiosity to turn problems into opportunities, our housekeeping standards, and our approach to Health and Safety across the factory.
Maintain your Subject Matter Expert (SME) level across all the on-car and off-car inventory used within the dyno.
Dyno support during events (covering “proof of concept”, “production sign-off”, “performance testing” and “turnaround service” activities), including but not limited to:
Power Unit dressing prior to an event.
Work with the Cell Technicians to install the Unit Under Test onto the test bed.
Crane operation and support for lifting procedures.
Reliability support during running such as borescoping and oil sampling.
Servicing and maintenance of our dyno equipment, including but not limited to:
Dyno-side gearboxes, take-off boxes and bearing installations.
Emulator systems that mimic car systems in a non-track environment.
Facility-side installations such as chillers and air handling units.
Reporting of feedbacks, and taking responsibility of resolving dyno-side issues.
Collaborate with the design, build. and test engineering teams to identify the most efficient and effective methods of delivering the agreed objectives within a test programme.
Participate in cross-training activities – educating others in your area(s) of specialism and being open to learning about other areas of the car. This includes the support of business needs in other areas of Research and Development, and developing strategy with race team and heritage on skillsets and approach.
Proactively support continuous improvement and data quality activities to improve our decision-making processes.
Support the enablement of our test facilities for commercial use.
