Purpose of the Role:
The Production Engineering Manager role leads both the New Product Introduction
(NPI) and Production Engineering Support (PES) functions. Positioned between
Production and Engineering, this role is a key interface between the two.
Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will be responsible for liaising with the
Engineering, Production and project teams whilst managing and leading the NPI and
PES teams to achieve the successful introduction of new products and the continued
manufacturing support of our diverse product range.
The role of Production Engineering Manager can be defined in two key focus areas,
each of which are vital to the ongoing success of the NPI / PES functions.
- Operational Management
- Team Management
Excellence in these areas will ensure the high quality, profitability, and repeatability of
delivered products and services.
Role Dimensions:
The role will require overtime during peak periods or as projects demand to ensure the
delivery of key objectives and responsibilities is achieved.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Ensure and proactively develop strong communication and working relationships with adjacent departments, upheld by processes which are clear and right sized for our business.
- Lead and manage the NPI and PES teams, reviewing resource and budget ensuring that the team is sized to fulfil their deliverables in our product creation process Advance 2.
- Ensure NPI projects are delivered on time, to specification and in a cost-effective manner.
- Champion the benefits of the NPI and PES teams to increase adoption of the processes organisation wide.
- Support the business in new project tendering by providing input into the bid team highlighting risk; manage and communicate the Operations stakeholder requirements.
- Provide technical input to Engineering and Production teams as part of new product review and legacy product updates.
- Champion continuous improvement, working in collaboration with the Quality, Operations teams, and analyse performance, to continually identify opportunities, to make incremental improvements to processes, products, and personnel.
- Lead with the focus of right first time while resolving issues as they arise and make decisive decisions, as a motorsport-oriented organisation agility is key.
- Provide regular management reports to Operations Leadership Team.
- Be responsible for the definition, configuration, and execution of the Execution System (MES) in McLaren Applied maximising integration with our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
- Build near and long-term strategies for the function, guiding the business in best practice.
- Lead the NPI and PES teams to evolve existing business systems to provide streamlined integrated solutions to improve efficiency, accountability and quality.
- Oversee the creation and amendment of manufacturing documentation to ensure consistency, clarity, and useability, developing new templates and processes when required.
- Responsible for the leadership, management, and motivation of the teams to set, monitor, and achieve objectives.
- On a weekly basis ensure that the PES and NPI teams are focused on the key priorities of our organisation, escalating when conflicting priorities are encountered or when activities have remained stagnant for too long.
- Mentor staff to improve team skills, career progression and production capabilities.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
- 1st or 2nd class Degree in Engineering within an electronic and manufacturing bias or a combination of relevant education and work-related experience within an NPI Environment – a HND or HNC will be considered with strong supporting relevant experience.
- Has developed proficiency in a range of processes or procedures through job-related training and considerable on-the-job expertise.
- Good knowledge and understanding of electro-mechanical products and manufacturing processes at both PCBA and box build/HL (High Level) assembly.
- Strong understanding of electronic equipment design and test processes.
- Excellent project management, organisational and interpersonal skills in relation to NPI and engineering tasks.
- Thorough understanding of IPC-610, IPC-7711, IPC-611, and J-STD standards.
- Comprehensive understanding of industry standards and regulations thereby ensuring guidelines are followed and machinery and equipment are operated safety.
- Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team to meet demanding project milestones. Experience in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
- Experience of using or configuring an MES system, ideally AegisFactoryLogix® however others are an advantage too.
- Highly competent with the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
- Excellent time management being an example to your team and other functions.
- Excellent attention to detail to maintain or exceed the high levels of production standards and efficiency in both oral and written communication.
- Experience with internal facilitation and negotiation, bringing cross-functional teams together to tackle a common goal.
- Experience in a high technology low production volume and high product mix
- manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of quality processes (8D, 5 Whys).
- Clarify, contain, possible causes, root cause, countermeasure, prevent Good understanding of working in similar high technology environment.
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
- Good understanding or previous experience of ERP or similar.
- IT skills, advanced excel capability and reporting skills are an advantage.
