General Summary:
This position reports to the Head of Performance Engineering or their designee; is located in Banbury, UK. Responsible for managing the running of all historic car programs including Testing Previous Car (TPC), Testing Mule Car (TMC) and running show car. In addition to the management of the programs, when on event, responsible for fulfilling the role of Test Engineer running the car on track managing the setup, run plan and operation of the car including communication with the driver on track. Expected to attend all Heritage Car associated events.
When required, share the trackside aspects of the role with junior engineers and provide coaching and guidance to help their development.
General Responsibilities:
Provide day-to-day coaching within the team; directs and mentors team members to maximise the performance and oversees daily activities.
Demonstrate trackside race engineering leadership in an engaging and collaborative manner.
Maintain and foster an inclusive environment at the facility, track and whilst traveling.
Manage department personnel from recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement through to separation.
Mentor, train and guide personnel as required. Develop staff using effective performance reviews and development plans.
Responsible for establishing standard operating procedures and budgets to maintain a practical yet functional department.
Promote teamwork and effective communication to develop good working relationships between all personnel and departments.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure the safe operation of historic cars at events.
Working with the Head of Performance Engineering, the Heritage operations group and our power unit supplier define the testing plan for each year covering TPC, TMC and running show car.
Work with the tyre science group and tyre supplier to forecast and order tyres.
Collaborate with the power unit supplier to plan event mileages and part usage.
Work with dedicated Heritage Engineers as well as all other interested groups to define test objectives, car setups and run plans for each event.
On event ensure the test objectives are met and when needed modify the program to make efficient use of track time.
On event be responsible for the setup, run plan and operation of the car.
Provide coaching and guidance to Junior Engineers in all trackside Engineering roles.
Maintain written procedures to aid in the operation of historic cars.
Collate and compile training material to aid Junior Engineers in transitioning to trackside roles.
Ensure compliance with all relevant FIA regulation in the operation of historic cars.
Work with the Heritage Lead Mechanic and RTS Chief Mechanic to ensure smooth operation during event preparation and during sessions.
Support current car Race Team when required.
Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
Assume any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Head of Performance Engineering or their designee.
Education and Work Experience:
Engineering degree, minimum 2:1
Minimum 3 years of experience in Formula 1 trackside as a Race Engineer
Experience in other Formulas would be beneficial.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
A can-do positive approach and a willingness to help others is essential.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to build productive relationships.
Capable of working in a team environment to a very high standard and a positive work attitude.
Robust technical background in racing car performance / vehicle dynamics.
Strong and wide-ranging technical background covering all aspects involved in the design, construction, and operation of Formula 1 cars.
Demonstrate rapid decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical manner.
Able to prioritize the workload and to manage time efficiently.
Work well within a team environment with personnel at all levels.
A sympathetic approach to your work colleagues and an ability to integrate within a group environment.
Equipment and Applications:
Excellent knowledge of ATLAS
Good understanding of lap time simulation tools and simulator environments
Solid computer knowledge, including Microsoft office products.
Work Environment Physical Demands:
An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
