Composite Design
In this placement, you’ll design and develop car components and assemblies made primarily from carbon fibre, such as the Survival Cell, Front and Rear Wings, Bodywork, Floors and Brake Ducts. You’ll handle component modelling, tooling design, and laminate definition, collaborating closely with other teams to ensure aerodynamic performance, mass efficiency and reliability. This CAD-based role involves designing components and related jigs and fixtures for current and future cars, with some analysis to guide development. You’ll work closely with production to ensure efficient manufacturing within tight deadlines, with Test and Development group to verify performance and reliability, and with the Car Build team for successful installation.
Mechanical Design
The Mechanical Design team handles the design, development and reliability of the suspension, steering and brakes on the Formula 1 car. This role blends creativity with analytical thinking, using CAD to design parts while considering optimal materials and manufacturing processes. You’ll work with the Structures group to optimise components for mass, stiffness, and strength and collaborate with Production to ensure cost-effectiveness. You’ll also ensure parts are approved for race use with the Test and Development team. You’ll be accountable for the reliability of your designs, resolving any issues swiftly and improving the suspension, steering, and brake performance using race team feedback and data analysis.
Test & Development (T&D)
In T&D we test, measure and investigate all aspects of the mechanical and structural systems of the Formula One car, including chassis safety, crash testing, suspension behaviour, power unit systems, gearbox, cooling, wings, structural bodywork, brakes and driver controls. By observing behaviour and measuring outcomes, we enhance simulation techniques and component reliability, elevating the car's performance. You'll support our engineers in delivering the best possible value to the technical team. You'll be challenged creatively and encouraged to learn and grow to your fullest potential.
Engine Systems
In this placement, you’ll design and develop the systems that integrate the power unit into the race car, including fuel and cooling systems. You’ll work with other teams to ensure these systems support power unit performance, and reliability, while being aerodynamically optimised and mass efficient. Primarily CAD-based, you'll design components, jigs, and fixtures for both current and future cars, while conducting analysis to guide development. You’ll collaborate with production to ensure components are manufactured efficiently within tight deadlines and with the trackside team to ensure the parts perform as expected, implementing any necessary reliability improvements.
Aero Design
As part of the Aero Design team, you’ll be responsible for engineering the hundreds of parts needed for our wind tunnel test program. You’ll learn to thrive under pressure, working at a rapid pace, and seeing the result of your efforts within days or even hours. You’ll develop a range of transferable engineering skills, collaborating with experienced engineers from various disciplines, and you’ll learn to communicate effectively and clearly while making a tangible and measurable impact on the performance of the race car.
Aero R&D Design
You’ll join a team of specialist Mechanical Engineers focused on delivering mechanical design research projects and new capabilities for the Aerodynamic Department. You’ll conceptualise, design, and engineer mechanical and electro-mechanical systems for the 60% Wind Tunnel Model, Aero Testing Equipment and Wind Tunnel facility. Using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (3DXperience), you’ll lead the design of cutting-edge system to enhance aerodynamic performance. You’ll also support physical R&D testing and support the assembly of the Wind Tunnel Models.
Working in a small team, you’ll have full responsibility for projects with the freedom to explore your own ideas and learn about Formula 1 Wind Tunnel and Model technology. This placement provides hand-on experience, personal growth and transferable skills development.
Technical Operations
In this role, you’ll contribute to streamlining processes, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring the car's optimal performance. You’ll collaborate with Aerodynamics, Design Office, and Production teams to ensure smooth information flow and timely project delivery. This dynamic role will expose you to various projects, where you'll continuously seek opportunities for improvement. Your responsibilities include process development, providing technical support, and optimising workflows. You’ll help ensure efficient project progress and data accuracy, while gaining valuable skills in a fast-paced environment.
Garage Equipment Design
You’ll develop innovative solutions to enhance the operational efficiency for trackside and in-house teams. Key Responsibilities include:
Designing Transport Systems for components like the chassis and master cylinders to optimise trackside operations and cut freight costs.
Developing Pitstop Equipment for traveling and in-house use
Cooling System Development for on the grid and garage use, improving vehicle performance and reliability.
Creating Rigs and Fixtures for component sub-assemblies and gearbox builds, supporting precise and efficient assembly of critical vehicle systems.
You’ll receive comprehensive training in CAD and engineering drawings, empowering you to take full ownership of your projects from initial concept to completion.
AMPT Design
An Industrial Placement role within the Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT) design group offers you an opportunity to be fully immersed in an engineering team, delivering innovative solutions across various high-performance and niche projects. You’ll focus on supporting mechanical and composite design functions using fundamental engineering skills and CAD, while also interacting with other groups such as Aerodynamics and Systems Modelling. In this role, you’ll make tangible contributions to AMPT’s objectives.
We are seeking candidates who embody our Racing GREEN values: Growth, Ready, Empower, Excellence, and Nurture.
