Systems Simulation Engineer
At The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team we are a team of passionate and enthusiastic people who work together to design and develop the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.
Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.
Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.
About the Role:
An opportunity has arisen for an inquisitive, highly methodical, and self-motivated Systems Simulation Engineer to join our CAE Team within our Research and Development group. Within this role you will be actively involved in the development of simulation tools and data analysis processes, and then utilise these to drive performance and reliability of current and future cars. Each day and each project are different – but you’ll be empowered to take the initiative and identify problems, deliver solutions, and measure the resulting improvements throughout the whole component design cycle (from concept all the way through to use on track).
Key Accountabilities (Duties):
Reporting to the Lead Systems Engineer, your duties will include:
Simulation and analysis of a car system, acting as the primary contact for all requests relating to that system and ensuring all requirements are understood and met.
Close collaboration with Design, Test and Development, Dyno and Trackside Engineering to verify and validate that the specification of the system meets the requirements.
Detailed documentation of the simulation and analysis that has been performance and reporting of results in a concise manner to inform stakeholders of outcomes.
Continuous development and improvement of simulation and analysis tools and processes to improve efficiency, fidelity and further our understanding of performance and reliability.
Occasional factory-based event support from our Race Support Room on a rotation within the CAE group. On your events you will analyse all the systems covered by the CAE Systems Group and liaise directly with Trackside Engineering and Design Office when issues are observed. This aspect of the role will require an element of weekend and out-of-hours working in line with the time zones and schedule of the race calendar.
The systems covered by the CAE group include suspension, steering, hydraulics, fuel, transmission, and cooling. Over time and linked to your personal development, the dedicated system that you focus on will rotate, allowing you to build up a detailed understanding of the car as a whole system.
Candidate Profile:
Essential:
Engineering or physics degree, or equivalent qualification(s).
Demonstrable experience of working in a high-performance engineering environment across multiple functions.
Thorough understanding of classical mechanics and dynamics, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
Proven ability to take the initiative, collaborate and deliver results across different departments and teams.
Curious, committed to continuous learning, and ability to adapt quickly to change.
Desirable:
Experience in coding to automate processes, manage data, and visualise information.
Experience in applying CFD tools and systems simulation tools.
Ability to creatively present data in formats that make it accessible and understandable to a wide range of stakeholders and business areas.
Demonstrable experience of delivering in a competition environment (such as sport) where the deadline is immovable.
Specific Advantageous Experiences:
Coding in MATLAB and/or Python.
Use of Fluent and/or nanoFluidX CFD tools.
Use of Dymola and/or Amesim for systems simulation.
Experience with McLaren Applied tools, primarily Atlas 10/11
Dashboard development in business insight tools such as PowerBI or Tibco Spotfire.
