Function
McLaren Applied presents a unique approach to improving transport by utilising decades of experience and expertise in optimising the performance of high-speed vehicles. We pioneer a better future for transport operators and manufacturers by applying Formula 1-derived technology.

Purpose of the Role:
The Pre-Sales Engineer will be the primary technology expert when engaging with new prospects and potential customers in the transport and connectivity space.
They will have a deep understanding of both McLaren Applied proprietary connectivity software and third-party technology used within our solutions. At the intersection of business development and engineering, they will support engagement with prospective clients, response to tender requests and determine technical requirements for our products.
They will have in-depth knowledge of IP networks, wireless technologies including Wi-Fi and cellular networks (LTE, 5G NSA/SA, satellite, mmWave), and Linux platforms.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Fully conversant with detailed requirements, capturing and communicating salient points within the sales and business development team.
- Interacting with clients to determine technological requirements and tracking any changes that may materialise during what is sometimes a protracted sales process.
- Using in-depth product and/or industry knowledge to provide specialized technical application knowledge and expertise to sales and business development teams and the client through sales presentations and product demonstrations.
- Understanding and contributing to the sales process by way of responding to RFIs, RFPs and RFQs, and participating in quote preparation.
- Designing and implementing solutions from McLaren Applied and third-party products, driving Proof of Concepts and demonstrating the solution implemented to match the client requirements.
- Gauging user experience through coverage and performance testing, optimising the system for adherence to the minimum requirements.
- Managing the technical handover from sales to delivery through training and documentation of all aspects of the solution.
- Maintaining knowledge of assigned products and offering technical feedback to the internal product department to ensure future customer requirements are explored.
- Supporting marketing teams when technical sales materials are created
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
- Demonstrable industry experience in TCP/IP networking and Linux system administration.
- CCNA (or equivalent) or above with clear understanding of common L2 and L3 protocols
- Demonstrable ability to produce system architectures and the confidence to clearly explain data flow and application interaction.
- Exceptional technical, business, oral and written presentation and communication skills demonstrated through significant experience to both internal and external customers.
- Previous experience in technical role within the transport or telecommunications sector.
- Strong knowledge on wireless technologies specifically Wi-Fi (standards and device configuration) and cellular
- Self-motivated, innovative, and constantly looking for ways to improve both product and processes.
- Experience in the rail vehicle environment with an appreciation of rolling stock regulations. In particular, experience in defining and specifying system to be installed onto rail vehicles would be desirable.
- Extensive customer facing experience in sales or product capacity.
- Effective and proven interpersonal skills.
