Key Insights from RaceLogic's Hiring Manager

Company Overview and Operations

RaceLogic, a company celebrating over 30 years in motorsport and automotive technology, has established itself as a leading provider of data loggers and lap timing devices in the UK motorsport industry. In a recent interview, Customer Support Manager Mark Winwood offered valuable insights into the company's operations and career opportunities.

RaceLogic operates across multiple sectors, with their VBOX products being particularly well-known in motorsport and automotive testing. The company has also expanded into GNSS record and replay devices, providing testing solutions for GPS-enabled equipment developers. What sets RaceLogic apart is their comprehensive in-house approach – all products are designed, developed, and produced internally, creating a diverse workplace with roles ranging from software and firmware developers to hardware design engineers and customer support specialists.

Key Qualities for Success

When it comes to hiring, Mark emphasizes that proactivity and genuine enthusiasm are key qualities they seek in candidates.

"What everyone's looking for is generally people who are enthusiastic, proactive and inquisitive," he explains.

This is particularly important in motorsport businesses, which often start small and rely on employees willing to take initiative and tackle diverse challenges.

Breaking Into Motorsport

For those aspiring to enter the motorsport industry, Mark offers practical advice. He highlights the value of voluntary work with lower-level motorsport teams, suggesting that weekend involvement can provide crucial insights into how race teams operate. Even involvement in sim racing communities can demonstrate genuine interest in the field.

Education vs. Experience

Interestingly, while many candidates have university degrees in motorsport or automotive engineering, Mark suggests that formal education isn't essential.

"We've got a mixture of people on my team,"

he notes, explaining that relevant work experience and demonstrated passion for the industry can be equally valuable.

The Interview Process

During interviews, RaceLogic looks for candidates who can communicate effectively and naturally.

"Communication is very important, particularly in our job when we're talking to customers on a regular basis and lots of different types of people all around the world," Mark shares.

The company particularly values potential over experience, seeking individuals who can grow with the organization.

Career Development

RaceLogic's commitment to employee development is reflected in their flexible approach to career progression. Rather than following a predetermined path, the company works with employees to identify their interests and develop personalized career trajectories, leveraging the diverse opportunities available across different departments and products.
