JGR is seeking a Data Scientist to join our growing Analytics department. The successful candidate will work closely with our data & engineering teams to execute projects aimed at driving performance development in our race cars and improving race execution. This role will involve utilizing advanced analytical techniques, including ML and AI technologies, to extract insights, optimize strategies, and contribute to our competitive advantage in the highly dynamic world of NASCAR racing.

Primary Responsibilities
Collaborate with engineering and race team personnel to identify areas for performance improvement and translate such information into well-defined and actionable projects.
Participate in brainstorming sessions to identify innovative AI/ML approaches and frameworks for problem-solving.
Design and implement advanced machine learning and AI models to address the defined objectives.
Conduct research to stay updated on the latest AI/ML methodologies and incorporate them into project designs.
Work with data engineers to collect, clean, and process data from multiple sources including vehicle telemetry streams, on-car data systems, race data feeds, and external APIs/databases.
Experiment with various data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model optimization techniques to improve performance.
Conduct predictive modeling and simulation to forecast race outcomes, evaluate race strategies, and enhance decision-making processes.
Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics, ensuring reliability, scalability, and accuracy.
Develop deployment strategies, including integration with production systems and model monitoring.
Optimize and retrain models as needed based on real-world performance feedback.
Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to stakeholders through data visualization, reports, and presentations.
Document technical processes, results, and best practices to ensure knowledge transfer within the team.
Evaluate and recommend AI/ML tools, platforms, and libraries to enhance the team’s capabilities and support the adoption of best practices in software engineering, including version control, testing, and code reviews.
Lead efforts to improve the scalability, efficiency, and robustness of AI/ML solutions.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. A Master’s or PhD in a relevant domain is highly desirable, particularly if the candidate has experience in research or developing novel AI/ML algorithms.
4-6 years of professional work experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning techniques.
Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles, plus a mathematical foundation, particularly in linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB for data manipulation and analysis plus experience with relevant libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, NumPy, pandas).
In-depth knowledge of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques.
Expertise in advanced AI techniques such as deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and generative AI.
Experience with DevOps and MLOps practices and related tools (source controls, pipeline & model management, etc.)
Applied experience in the field of professional sports analytics or automotive engineering is a plus.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a keen attention to detail.
Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Logistics
Job location is in Huntersville, NC; full-time, on-site work is required.
Weekend work or on-call availability to support race events is required.
Limited travel to test or race events may be required.
