In the high-technology world of Formula 1, you might not expect to find a former schoolteacher.

But Oliver Marler's inspirational journey from the classroom to the pitlane is a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and transferable skills. It's also proof that you have complete control over your own future.

Now a "Product Manager for Training and Engineering Support" at McLaren Applied, Oliver's story is an important read for anyone with an interest in a career in motorsport.

Building a Foundation in Education

Oliver's journey began far from the racetrack. After earning a degree in Sports Science and Education from Brunel University London in 2002, he spent five years as a Physical Education teacher and Head of Year 9 at Trinity Catholic High School.

Little did he know that the skills he was honing – instruction, curriculum design, and leadership – would one day be applied to motorsport technology.

The Transition to Automotive

In 2006, Oliver made a pivotal career move, joining Mercedes-Benz UK as a Product and Brand Training Specialist. Over the next eight years, he progressed through various roles, including a stint as District Fleet Manager.

This period was crucial in developing his product training and customer service expertise – skills that would prove vital for his future.

Accelerating Growth: Expanding Horizons

Oliver's career continued to evolve with a brief but impactful role as People Development Manager at Volkswagen UK in 2014. He then spent seven years at Raytheon UK, managing complex projects and leading development teams. These experiences broadened his skill set and prepared him for the leadership and people development aspects of his role at McLaren Applied.

The McLaren Applied Breakthrough

In August 2022, Oliver's career took an exciting turn when he joined McLaren Applied as a Product Manager for Training and Engineering Support. This role combines his passion for motorsport with his extensive experience in training and development.

"I never knew that McLaren Applied would need somebody to teach their products," Oliver reflects. "I kick myself now, years later, for not realising that possibility sooner."

Inside McLaren Applied: ATLAS Software

At the heart of Oliver's work is ATLAS, McLaren's sophisticated data analysis tool used across various motorsport series. ATLAS allows teams to analyse the "squiggly lines" (data traces) that drivers and engineers use to understand vehicle performance and driving techniques.

Oliver's role involves developing and delivering training programs for teams using ATLAS, from Formula 1 to NASCAR. His unique background in education and automotive training makes him ideally suited to help teams maximise the potential of this powerful software.

Beyond his day job, Oliver is also involved with Atlas GT Esports, bridging the gap between virtual and real-world racing and showcasing the versatility of the ATLAS platform.

Lessons for Career Changers

Oliver's journey offers valuable lessons for those looking to transition into motorsport:

  1. Transferable skills are key: Your experience in other fields can be surprisingly relevant.
  2. Network hard and seize opportunities: Oliver's career change began with a conversation in a pub. There are people out there who are continually looking for opportunities - this needs to be you to stand a chance of getting anywhere near an F1 team.
  3. Pursue your passions: Oliver's involvement in sim racing helped him understand ATLAS before joining McLaren Applied. He set ATLAS up with iRacing; quite an unusual thing for a sim racing setup; but it certainly caught Mclaren's attention!

For those aspiring to work in motorsport, Oliver offers this advice:

  1. Research thoroughly: Understand the company and its position in the industry.
  2. Show initiative: Create demo projects or volunteer at races to gain experience.
